Gold bar weight: how heavy is a gold bar?
Gold is one of the densest metals: about 19.3 grams per cubic centimetre, nearly twice as dense as lead. That is why gold bars look small for their weight.
- A 10 g bar is about the size of a fingernail.
- A 100 g bar fits in the palm, like a stack of a few credit cards.
- A 1 kg bar is roughly the footprint of a smartphone and around a centimetre thick.
- A Good Delivery bar, held by central banks and bullion banks, weighs between 350 and 430 troy ounces, typically around 400 oz or 12.4 kg.
Cast bars vs minted bars
| Cast bar | Minted bar | |
|---|---|---|
| How it is made | Molten gold poured into a mould | Gold sheet cut and stamped under pressure |
| Look | Thicker, rounded edges, slightly irregular | Thin, flat, polished, sharp edges |
| Packaging | Often loose, with a certificate | Usually sealed in a certificate card |
| Common sizes | 50 g to 1 kg, TT bars | 1 g to 100 g |
| Premium | Usually lower | Usually higher |
Both contain the stated weight of gold at the stamped purity. The difference is appearance, packaging and premium, not the gold itself.
