- Banks. Some UAE banks offer gold bars or gold accounts to their clients.
- Refiners and mints. Some sell directly, often in larger sizes or to professional clients.

Step by step: buying your first bar
1. Set your budget and choose a size
Small bars of 1 g to 20 g are affordable but cost more per gram. Bars of 50 g and above carry lower premiums. See gold bar sizes.
2. Check the live gold price
Look at the gold rate today before you contact any seller. You will know immediately whether a quote is reasonable.
3. Ask for a written quote
Ask for the total price of a named bar: brand, weight, purity. A good quote states the price, how long it is valid and the payment methods.
4. Complete the ID check
You will be asked for your Emirates ID or passport. For larger amounts, the seller may ask where the funds come from. This is normal and required by law.
5. Pay and lock the price
Once you accept and pay, the price should be fixed. Use a traceable payment method and keep the proof.
6. Inspect your bar
Check the refiner mark, weight, fineness and serial number. The serial must match the certificate and invoice. Sealed cards should be intact.
7. Keep your documents and store your gold safely
Your invoice, certificate and payment proof are your proof of ownership. Store them separately from the gold.
Documents and KYC
UAE anti-money-laundering rules require dealers in precious metals to identify their customers. Expect to provide:
- Individuals: Emirates ID or passport; for large amounts, information on the source of funds.
- Companies: trade licence, details of the authorised person and sometimes of the shareholders.
Dealers must also file a report with the authorities for transactions of AED 55,000 or more made in cash or by wire transfer.
VAT on investment gold in the UAE
The UAE applies 5% VAT to most goods, including gold jewellery. Investment gold is treated differently: bars and coins of at least 99% purity, of the kind traded on global bullion markets, are generally zero-rated, so the buyer pays no VAT on them.
Coins below 99% purity, such as 22K coins, do not meet that condition and are generally charged VAT. Between VAT-registered businesses buying gold for resale or manufacturing, a reverse-charge mechanism applies.
How to read a gold rate board in Dubai
Shops in the Gold Souk and malls display daily rates for 24K, 22K, 21K and 18K gold. These boards are useful, but they answer a different question than the one an investor asks.
- The rate is per gram of metal. It does not include the making charge on jewellery or the premium on a bar.
- Each karat has its own line. 22K and 21K rates are lower because the gold content is lower.
- Rates may lag the market by minutes or hours.
For a bar, ask for the total price of that exact bar and compare it with its live value. The difference is the premium you are paying.
Buying gold in Dubai as a visitor
Visitors can buy gold in Dubai with a valid passport. Before you travel, check two sets of rules:
- Leaving the UAE. Travellers carrying more than AED 60,000 in cash, precious metals or precious stones must declare them to UAE customs.
- Arriving home. Many countries limit or tax gold imports by travellers. Check your destination’s customs rules before you buy.
Keep your invoice with you when you travel: customs officers may ask for it.
Mistakes to avoid
- Comparing gram rates instead of total prices. Premiums differ by size and brand.
- Buying from sellers without an address. Check the trade licence.
- Ignoring resale. Bars from little-known brands may get lower buyback offers.
- Opening sealed cards. A sealed bar is easier to resell.
- Losing the invoice. It is the simplest proof of ownership.
- Paying in untraceable ways. Keep proof of every payment.
- Trying to time the market perfectly. Many buyers prefer to buy in steps.
